Myrtle M. Luoma died peacefully on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at The Lighthouse of Hancock (formerly Cypress Manor).
Myrtle was born on November 2, 1920, in Wolverine Location, a daughter of Fred and Mary (Pajunpaa) Winquist and graduated from Calumet High School in 1938.
She was united in marriage to Eino W. Luoma on November 20, 1940. Eino died in 1972.
Myrtle was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet.
Myrtle was an honest, hardworking, loving Christian and she left this world unconditionally loving "her people" as she called her family as only she couldlove. She appreciated poetry, collected angels, and any treasure given to her by someone she loved.She enjoyed camping, picking agates on the Keweenaw beaches, crossword puzzles and was an avid reader.
She was a beloved grandmother that spent countless hours with her many grandchildren delighting in anything that brought them joy whether it was a tea party, picking wild berries, a hunt on a beach, or simply allowing them an indulgence that only she as their grandmother could allow.
She lived independently until the age of 90 when the ravages of arthritis limited her mobility to the degree that she chose to move to Cypress Manor.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; three brothers, Homer, Fred (Helen Perrault), Garfield; and five sisters, Lillian (Eino) Lampinen, Laila, Mildred (Werner) Kivela, Minerva, and Marcella (Bernard) Rota.
Surviving are one daughter: Dr. Anita (Clifford) Morton of Pella, Iowa; two sons; Dr. Jerry (Dolly Ozanich) Luoma of Laurium, Michigan; Dr. David (Jill Helmes) Luoma of Marquette, Michigan; four grandsons; Dr. Michael (Kerri) Luoma of Calumet, Michigan; Stephen Luoma of Dresden, Germany; Dr. Tyson (Jennifer) Luoma of Marquette, Michigan;Tristan Luoma of Ann Arbor, Michigan; sevengranddaughters; Dr. Mary (Charles) Strey of Pella, Iowa; Linda (Martin) Verhun of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Deborah (Alan) Burdette of Bloomington, Indiana;Nanette Luoma of Willis, Michigan; Carey (John) Sullivan of Laurium, Michigan; Nicole (Michael) Peattie of Simpsonville, South Carolina; Kira Luoma of Madison, Wisconsin; 23 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family is planning on a memorial service to be held in July that will be a celebration of Myrtle’s life. The details will be announced at a later time. Myrtle will be cremated and burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Ahmeek.
