Obituary for Gordon Edward Hoyem

October 12, 2014 Bootjack

Gordon Edward Hoyem Sr., Founder of Hoyem-Basso, a leading Engineering and Architectural firm Dies at 89.

Gordon Hoyem business leader, electrical, mechanical and civil engineer was appointed to the Michigan Commission of Architecture by Michigan’s former Governor Millikan in addition to being elected President of the Consulting Engineering Council of Michigan during his career.

Born in 1924 in Detroit, Gordon moved to Laurium, MI with his parents George and Nina where he lived until he enlisted into the US Navy’s Construction Battalion during World War II. During the war Hoyem served with distinction in Africa. After the War, Hoyem attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton, MI and then graduated from the University of Michigan where he received a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Hoyem went on to build a successful consulting engineering company that pioneered the use of computers in the design of many iconic buildings including the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Building at Michigan Tech University.

After selling the firm, Gordon retired to his lake home in Lake Linden, MI where he and his family spent countless days creating lasting memories. An avid fisherman, Gordon explored the shores of Lake Superior and Portage Lake in search of trophy fish with friends and family. An accomplished bridge player with groups in MI and CA, Gordon was also a member of the local Sportsman Club and loved his trips to Isle Royal and was a longtime member of Michigan Steelheaders Association.

Gordon passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Husband to Charlotte Mae Hoyem (Valentine) for over 50 years and father to Karen Hoyem, Valri (Kim) Peyser, Gordon Hoyem II, George (Ellen) Hoyem and Charlotte (David) Multer, he was deeply loved and will be forever missed.
